It's that time of the year again; nightmare time. No, it's not about watching too many horror movies or too many episodes of Criminal Minds. It's about the upcoming premiere. Nightmares before a premiere are nothing new as such - I've been known to have one or two before show time. In my stock nightmare it's the premiere and the audience arrives, but somehow this seems to come as a surprise to both the cast and the crew. |

Kelli Sloan, my character in Jane Shepard’s short play "Commencing", is the exact opposite of me in almost every way. She wears short, tight clothes. She is not interested in politics or social issues. She is rude and abrupt. She has been hurt very badly, and she is trying her best to bounce back from that experience. This character was hard to create. No less because she and I differ so much in our experience, life choices and general attitude. Have you ever been grabbed by the throat or punched in the stomach? Have you ever lost sight in one eye or had some teeth knocked out? No? Now imagine you had: what would it feel like? Actors face a lot of challenges depending on the role they play, but I feel like one of the things we often forget about is the body. We think that the body is only used for expressing emotions while dancing, and that acting is more about the words and the actions behind them. But our bodies are still part of us, restricting us as well as allowing us to experience things through them. I’ve come to appreciate how much the body can express, which is why I wanted to focus on movement in ‘Nine’, the play I’m directing together with Anastasia. Working on these two plays, "Nine" and "Commencing", has been somewhat intense. Especially the play that I am acting in, "Nine", is thematically quite thought-provoking, and it has been on my mind a lot. Lately I have been noticing things around me that remind me of how I have interpreted the play and what it means to me. So, to get some of these things out of my system, I decided to get a bit artsy-fartsy.
